Improved Safety
Safe office workers manage their health and energy levels to reduce sick days, absenteeism, and disease.
'Site' or 'field' workers comply with strict safety policies to reduce hazards, injuries, accidents and fatalities. Physical safety is vital for workers who operate with heavy machinery in dangerous work environments.
The term safety takes on new meaning for employees who work in an office environment. Safe office workers manage their health and energy levels to reduce sick days, absenteeism and disease.
Safety in the Office
Although office workers are not threatened by operating heavy machinery or working in industrial areas, they are consistently exposed to stress and demanding workloads.
The following signs and symptoms of stress are sourced from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety:
Physical: headaches, grinding teeth, clenched jaws, chest pain, shortness of breath, pounding heart, high blood pressure, muscle aches, indigestion, constipation or diarrhea, increased perspiration, fatigue, insomnia, frequent illness.
Psychosocial: anxiety, irritability, sadness, defensiveness, anger, mood swings, hypersensitivity, apathy, depression, slowed thinking or racing thoughts; feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, or of being trapped.
Behavioural: overeating or loss of appetite, impatience, quickness to argue, procrastination, increased use of alcohol or drugs, increased smoking, withdrawal or isolation from others, neglect of responsibility, poor job performance, poor personal hygiene, change in religious practices, change in close family relationships.
Creating health sustaining work environments and supporting employee wellness will reduce these symptoms and improve the safety of office workers.
Health in the Field or On-Site
Site workers are also exposed to not only worksite threats, but stress and demanding workloads as well.

It is important for field workers to be educated on how their nutrition and lifestyle choices affect their safety as well as those they work with.
Liability Awareness |
“Employers are required to protect employees and the public from the unsafe actions of a worker.”
“By providing a healthy workplace environment, employers protect themselves from liability charges related to exposure to an identified workplace hazard. Employers may soon face litigation based on the lack of due diligence that creates excessive stress for employees.” Source: Health Communication Unit at the Centre for Health Promotion, University of Toronto.
